Instagram Launches a New App Called IGTV for Long-Form Video

Watch out, YouTube. Instagram today launched a new app for watching long-form vertical video on your phone, IGTV.

"Teens may be watching less TV, but they're watching more creators online", explained Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom, who added that Instagram users consumed 60% more video over the past year. "IGTV is focused on the creators you love most and already follow on Instagram". All this will likely be revealed as the service rolls out "over the next few weeks" on Android and iOS. Along with that, Instagram's also creating an entirely separate IGTV app that'll start playing videos as soon as you open it.

Instagram's announcement begs the question of whether this new format of mobile-first video content will last.

"The way we are watching video is changing", Systrom told the event.

Instagram and Snapchat have been waging war with one another for years, but Instagram is branching out to attack new platforms this week. So IGTV features can also be accessed on the standard Instagram mobile app.

Instagram wants the new feature to reach as many social media users as possible for obvious reasons.

"The magical part about IGTV is that a lot of these creators don't have to start from scratch", says Kevin Systrom, Instagram CEO, at a press event following the release of the app. IGTV has four subheadings that allow you to customize your viewing.

Once opened, the bottom of the app shows a number of videos that are trending, and has tabs that let you view videos from your followers as well. Instagram added the 10-minute constraint for all users is a short-term measure for IGTV's rollout that will eventually be dropped.

What makes this app different than Youtube is the native support for vertical videos as opposed to landscape video.
