AMC launches $20-a-month subscription plan to compete with MoviePass

A-List tickets can also be used for IMAX, 3-D and other enhanced showings that otherwise come with an upcharge.

MoviePass sent out a message Wednesday on its Twitter feed saying: "Heard AMC Theaters jumped on board the movie subscription train".

The virtuous trolling of AMC is rubbing some subscribers the wrong way, though, in the wake of reports that MoviePass is adding what CEO Mitch Lowe calls "high-demand" pricing for very popular movies. He also admitted it's to "make sure that we can continue to offer a valuable service and support the whole enterprise".

Aron declined to directly answer questions about MoviePass Wednesday.

But subscription services are especially popular among Millennials, who have proven hard for theaters to attract.

Theatres wants to directly compete with MoviePass, and MoviePass isn't taking it lightly.

They followed their first message up with another that read: 'AMC has repeatedly disparaged our model as a way to discourage our growth because all along they wanted to launch their own, more expensive plan. Hmm, it's good that MoviePass has a little competition since that always works out best for the consumers.

Each subscription comes with a three-month commitment, and permits users to make advance reservations and see movies in all formats, including 3D and IMAX. "Also, since MoviePass has almost three million subscribers, that clearly indicates that there is the demand for a subscription-type system for going to the movies". In January, MoviePass removed 10 of AMC's most popular theaters from its service, claiming it was a test to see if customers would use a different theater if necessary. They can even see all three movies on the same day, with a two-hour buffer in between each showtime. But, I saw many benefits to it, prior to the recent restrictions.

Perri Nemiroff and Jeff Sneider are here to offer their thoughts on this MoviePass news and unpack what it might mean for users of the service. Here's everything you need to know about AMC Stubs A-List, how it stacks up vs MoviePass, and if it's worth it.

"I'd sign up for that", Chris Reimers of Panorama City said. We'd never reach 12, but it would still be a deal.

Once you've got it, all you've got to do is find your movie theater, pick a film, check in and go.

Who's excited for Stubs A-List? The MoviePass Unlimited plan is $9.99 per month and allows one film viewing per day for the whole month.

People originally thought AMC was turning away MoviePass. "I think that's going to make it more hard for MoviePass, even if they have a big market presence, kind of last and find a way to become profitable. Stubs A-List is AMC's next evolution of delivering incredible benefits to our loyal customers, and we're excited to continue to grow the program by leaps and bounds".
