Yoga a powerful unifying force, says Modi

The International Yoga Day (IDY) which is celebrated on June 21 each year, is witnessing a series of celebrations which are being kicked off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with full zeal and enthusiasm. Yoga enthusiasts including Diplomats of other countries, Saudi friends, Indian Community members, School children, Media persons etc. participated in the event.

Yoga became known in the West towards the end of the 19th century as it was undergoing a major revival in India under the Hindu teacher Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902).

He added, "For example yesterday (Wednesday), we went to the Corniche and in front of the Ritz Carlton area we held a "yoga vistar", did some yoga postures in the Red Sea beach area with the iconic 300 meters King Fahd Fountain in the backdrop". He said Yoga not only helps keep the body free of diseases, but also strengthens the mind and intellect. "I hope that Yoga can become binding force for the world", he said. "Instead of increasing suffering, Yoga heals", the 67-year-old said. And if you haven't tried your bit of yoga yet, don't wait, give it a shot and thank us later.

Oman was also one of the co-sponsors of the Resolution of the United Nations General Assembly which had declared in December 2014, at the initiative of Prime Minister of India, June 21 as the International Day of Yoga.

The theme for International Yoga Day 2018 is Yoga for Peace.

"Yoga should be a 365-day affair and should be practiced for a healthy living", stated Sudhansu Adhikari, Odisha chief of the Patanjali Yoga Samiti.

Addressing a large gathering with the British-era Friday building as the backdrop, Mr. Modi said yoga has shown the world the way from "illness to wellness" and enriched lives across the globe. "Doing your day-to-day activities with diligence and complete awareness is a form of Yoga as well", a statement quoting Modi said.

The word "yoga" has its origins in the ancient Sanskrit language and means "to attach, join, harness, yoke".
