France vs. Peru - Football Match Report

Paris Saint-Germain forward Mbappe - aged 19 years and 183 days - underlined his rich talent and became France's youngest scorer at a World Cup when he poked home in the first half.

Australia, trailing unbeaten Denmark - now second in Group C - by three points will need to beat Peru on June 26 if they are to have any chance of progressing, but following the South Americans' display against France that will be no easy feat.

France's forward Kylian Mbappe (second right) celebrates his goal with teammates during their Russian Federation 2018 World Cup Group C match against Peru at the Ekaterinburg Arena in Ekaterinburg on June 21, 2018.

"I've always said that the World Cup is a dream for any player", said Mbappe, who was born a few months after France won the 1998 title.

But the best opportunity of the first half fell to Peru's returning record goalscorer Paolo Guerrero, who cannily ran across goal but shot directly at Hugo Lloris from eight yards.

Peru coach Ricardo Gareca said: "We thank the Peruvian fans so much for the great support in Russian Federation".

"After Peru lost their opening game to Denmark 1-0, they needed a least a point against France to stay in contention following a 36-year absence from the tournament".

Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is making his 100th global appearance.

However, France had the first real chances.

Chances were flowing for France, Raphael Varane missing with a header before Gallese saved with his legs to deny Griezmann after Giroud found his strike partner with a headed pass.

Champagne football is what the footballing world is accustomed to when watching France but in the second half, they were forced to defend and they did so superbly.

After a slow start to the game, France began to impose themselves.

France are unbeaten in their last eight World Cup fixtures against CONMEBOL opposition (W4 D4).

Opponents Peru have been one of the most entertaining teams to watch at the World Cup so far: they play with energy, zest, intent, national pride and a healthy dollop of skill, which is what Ricardo Gareca wants.

Deschamps, a World Cup victor as a player in 1998, has an impressive selection of forwards to choose from and could give Olivier Giroud a start.

Substitute Ousmane Dembele should perhaps have done better when he fired wide of the right post from 17 yards out in the 82nd minute, while Peru's final hope saw Guerrero hit a tame free-kick straight at Lloris from 30 yards out with two minutes remaining.

Talking to the press ahead of the Group C game in Yekaterinburg, the most eastern city at this World Cup, Varane leapt to the defense of Mbappé, who faded after a strong start against Australia.

Frank Lebouef feels France "played like a small team" in the second half against Peru, and doesn't hold back in his opinion of Paul Pogba as a leader.

This was insufficient in the end, and France's experience and class were clearly visible as they absorbed the numerous waves of pressure that Peru posed.
