Attorneys General Call On Trump To End Family Separation Policy

Similarly in May, it was Mr. Sessions who announced that the Trump administration would step up prosecutions of parents who cross the USA border illegally with their children, separating families if necessary in hopes of deterring such crossings.

A bipartisan group of former U.S. attorneys have released a letter that calls for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to end his department's "zero tolerance" immigration policy.

In the letter, the attorneys general argue that the policy of separation is not in the best interest of the children who end up at the border.

"What's happening on the border is having a direct impact on what's happening in New Jersey", New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal said in a statement.

The adults, many who are seeking asylum, will face criminal prosecution for illegal entry. "That makes it less likely crime victims and witnesses will come forward to work with law enforcement and that, in turn, makes our communities less safe".

"Put simply, the deliberate separation of children and their parents who seek lawful asylum in America is wrong", the letter states.

Surely even White House aides (not to mention Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen) must be upset that the president sent them out to lie and then pulled the rug out from under them.

- U.S. Rep. Kevin Yoder called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to halt the separation of families during a crackdown on illegal entries, going further than any other member of Kansas' all Republican congressional delegation in expressing concerns.

Since President Donald Trump and his administration implemented its zero-tolerance policy at the border, more than 2,300 children have been forcibly removed and locked up from their parents, A.P. reports.

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra on Tuesday joined New Mexico Attorney General Hector H. Balderas and 19 attorneys general in demanding the U.S. Department of Justice immediately end its new "zero tolerance" immigration policy which separates children from their parents.

Q: Does this new policy specifically require that families are separated?

Both Republican and Democratic former USA attorneys argue that the policy goes beyond "inhumane" - it overburdens the justice system by requiring a surge in resources to handle cases that are Class B misdemeanors.

Wright said he does not want Sessions to be removed from the church. I appreciate the need to enforce and protect our worldwide boundaries, but this zero-tolerance policy is cruel.

Those who signed the complaint letter claim that Sessions' "tremendous social/political power", his role as a Sunday school teacher and the "severe and ongoing" effects of his actions compel them to call for accountability. "Splitting up parents and children is too harsh a penalty for what is commonly a misdemeanor offense", Magidson wrote in an editorial in the Houston Chronicle.

Mr Sessions announced the new policy would change the current law of charging first-time border crossers with a misdemeanour offence.

The United Methodist Church is the third-largest religious denomination in the USA, with over 7 million lay members.

The group said in a June 18 statement that Sessions violated Paragraph 2702.3 of the Denominations' Book of Discipline.
