The Saudi Arabian national team's rough start to World Cup continued on Tuesday, as the team's plane caught fire in midair.

"There is no doubt that facing the Uruguayan team is hard and that it is known for its global stars, but we are determined to improve our image from the previous match and the joy of the Saudi fans", said Saudi Arabia midfielder Taisir Al-Jassim.

"The Saudi Football Federation wishes to reassure everyone about the safety of all members of the mission of the national team after a minor technical malfunction in an engine".

The players could be seen leaving the plane - a Russian Airlines Airbus A319-100 - shortly after landing.

Blaming nerves for its underwhelming 1-0 opening World Cup win against Egypt, Uruguay vowed to be sharper and faster when it faces Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. Defeat against Uruguay would nearly certainly see them eliminated from the competition, although they also play against Egypt in their final group game.

Saudi Arabia will face Luis Suarez and Uruguay in its next match.

Despite only 3.4 million people to choose from, Uruguay have long punched above their weight in worldwide soccer, lifting the first ever World Cup in 1930 and producing the infamous "Maracanazo" by beating hosts Brazil to win it again in 1950.
