FFA backs move to award 2026 World Cup to USA-Canada-Mexico

Federation Internationale de Football Association insists that contracts with host cities contain a provision they be governed under Swiss law and give Federation Internationale de Football Association the ability to modify agreements at any time.

"The United bid was strong and if it was just the United States, I think Morocco would have beaten them", said Cameroon federation official Kevin Njomo, whose country voted for Morocco.

Title holders Germany open their World Cup campaign against Mexico on Sunday, aiming to continue their spotless start into big events under coach Joachim Low.

Morocco lost its bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup to the United-bid (which is made up of the United States of America, Canada and Mexico) after delegates at FIFA's 68th Congress voted on Wednesday. "Mexico doesn't deserve it".

The 2026 World Cup will be the first to host 48 teams, a significant increase from the 32 that now participate. Preparation for the World Cup will not require major construction work because the 16 stadiums where matches will be played already exist. Both the United States and Canada failed to qualify for this year's World Cup.

The tournament will be the first World Cup in the United States since 1994, and bid organizers frequently highlighted the importance of hosting a World Cup as a way to mark and push the expansion of the sport in the U.S.

The joint bid had been the front-runner for the 48-team tournament from the moment a North American coalition was first mooted two years ago, and there have been spells when it has looked like the only credible candidate.

Thanks to FIFA's new more transparent bidding process it has been revealed which delegates voted for which bid. The World Cup will go from a 32-team tournament to 48, however the victor will play the same amount of games (7) as they do now. The hope behind this is that it will make the group stage more competitive and exciting. Qatar is preparing now to host the World Cup in 2022.

"Everything is focussed on Sunday", Low said ahead of the game against the Mexicans at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium.
