Robbie Williams kicks off World Cup 2018 with obscene gesture

Morocco and Iran play the Group B opener later in the afternoon with the eagerly anticipated game between European champions Portugal and 2010 world champions Spain in the evening.

"The 2018 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony will have a slightly different format compared to previous editions of the tournament,"a statement on FIFA's website stated".

The opening ceremony started at 3.30pm BST, just half-an-hour before the first match got underway at 4pm BST.

Williams previously said of his appearance: "I'm so happy and excited to be going back to Russian Federation for such a unique performance".

Like every World Cups, this year too there was a stunning opening ceremony in the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, Russia.

Operatic singer Aida Garifullina then outdid everyone by arriving on a enormous mechanical phoenix, before duetting with Robbie on "Angels".

But in a speech that went on a little longer than they usually do on these occasions, Putin made several veiled references to the country's current isolation on the global stage after a series of diplomatic crises. Tune in here for a recap of the opening ceremony performances below.

"Angles", the single for which Robbie William is known for then started with the crowd going insane. Williams was surrounded by dancers, who were decked out in soccer-inspired attire.

Williams stuck to hit songs "Let Me Entertain You" and "Rock DJ" during the ceremony.

There was a dazzling on-pitch light show to accompany Williams and opera star Garifullina, with performers dressed in the colors of each of the 32 World Cup teams bopping to the music. In front of stunned audiences, the singer swore at them - yes, for the last time, he flipped at all of us for real. Flag bearers and representatives from countries around the world took the field as the two singers carried out their performance. "I'm pinching myself again".

It didn't get much better for the Crown Prince as Russian Federation romped home to a 5-0 win, which raised hopes the low-ranked hosts might progress into the tournament's later stages.
