Apple just banned cryptocurrency mining on all its devices

According to the new rules, Apple will no longer allow indie developers to publish any wallet app on the App Store as only developers affiliated with a registered organization are eligible.

Apple has taken steps to protect its products from malicious mining practices by adding new rules to its developer guidelines so that they now explicitly prohibit malware mining in the background of Mac and iOS Apps as reported by Mashable. This is not a move against cryptocurrency apps in general.

Notably, Apple said that it will not block the mining apps that mine outside of the device, like cloud-based mining.

Aside from banning crypto mining on its devices, Apple also outlined the general use of cryptocurrencies. That may not be the only issue, but it brings to the limelight what view the company has on apps affect the performance of its devices.

Apple additionally wants to ensure the seriousness of Initial Coin Offerings, cryptocurrency futures trading, and other crypto-securities or quasi-securities trading. In the guidelines before the update, it was specified that the apps facilitating cryptocurrency exchange must accord with all the governmental laws and the Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) also must fulfill all applicable state and federal laws.

Four years ago, Apple removed every single bitcoin wallet application on its App Store, including popular wallet app Blockchain.

Apple Says 'No' to Cryptocurrency Mining on iPhone

Speaking to CCN at the time, Jaxx CEO Anthony Di Iorio revealed Apple had stuck to approving a select six cryptocurrencies, namely: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin, Litecoin, Ripple and the then DAO token.

But there's no way to go back and either block or retrieve data previously shared.

In July 2017, Apple 'approved' Dash as a cryptocurrency.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has made a number of thinly-disguised attacks on Facebook by emphasising his company's own pro-privacy credentials.

Apple's new guidelines "sound like they're nearly written in response to what Onavo and others have been doing", said Will Strafach, a researcher who has studied Onavo Protect and focuses on the security of Apple's iOS mobile operating system.
