"I honestly don't know that there's anything that's been passed down to us that would be affecting (suicide rates) one way or the other", Brennan said, adding that the Board of Health does not have any mental health specialists.

Firearms were by far the leading method, accounting for about half the suicides.

"Unfortunately, our data show that the problem is getting worse", CDC Principal Deputy Director Anne Schuchat, M.D., said in a press briefing on Thursday.

The national rate increased as well, jumping 25 percent over the same time frame.

The CDC found that suicides had increased in every state except Nevada, where they decreased by 1 percent. It provides free and confidential support 24 hours a day, seven days a week for people in suicidal crisis or distress.

WDAY reached out to the Village Family Services to find out why these numbers have jumped so much over the course of those 17 years. "Opioids were present in 31 percent of individuals who died by poisoning".

"Many people who die by suicide do not have standard markers of suicidal behavior", said Mark Kaplan, professor of social welfare at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs. They also looked at data from its National Violent Death Reporting System which covers 27 states to gain a fuller picture of the circumstances surrounding the suicides.

54% of suicides did not have a known mental health condition.

"The reason most suicide decedents don't have a known mental disorder is that they were never diagnosed, not that they didn't have one", said Dr. David Brent, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburg. And in Kentucky, they increased by 37 percent.

"We don't have all the answers. What we know for sure is that telling and talking and connecting with people is the path to healing, so we need to create more pathways for that".

More research also needs to be done on firearms and suicide, experts say. That number has remained steady over recent decades, she said.

On Saturday, she spoke about the need to recognize and respond to people at potential risk for suicide. Still, the researchers found a 10 percent higher risk of suicide among people who had served in the military.

The CDC study found, too, that suicide increased among all sexes, ages, races and ethnic groups.

It is hitting many places especially hard. Even if you think you don't want to get involved or don't want your friend to be mad at you or if you're the one suffering and don't want to be talked out of it or feel insecure about asking for help. Mental Health Therapist Courtney Watford.

Montana had the highest suicide rate, at 29.2 per 100,000 people per year, while the District of Columbia had the lowest, at 6.9 suicides per 100,000 people per year.
