Formula One: Hamilton blow as Mercedes postpone new engine in Canada

The 33-year-old Briton, who loves spending time in North America where he has additionally won the United States Grand Prix four times, arrived in Montreal on Tuesday night after visiting California, reportedly to check on his dogs Roscoe and Coco, and NY.

But he will have to draw on all that experience and expertise with his Mercedes set to be at a disadvantage in several key areas against Vettel and his Ferrari over the next three days.

And the race in Canada will have the same compounds that were used in Monaco - the supersoft, the ultrasoft and the hypersoft tires - when Mercedes struggled to bring it up to the optimum temperature and extract the maximum performance from the tires. "Hopefully, we can turn things around and pick up more points".

All three have won two races so far this season.

Mercedes have delayed the introduction of a power unit upgrade until after this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix due to a "quality issue", the Formula One world champions said on Wednesday.

"So all Mercedes-powered cars will be running PU1 for this weekend, too, before receiving new units in France".

All this means Vettel should be the man to beat in Montreal and a failure to capitalise on a weakened enemy would massively hurt his championship chances. As with Schumacher before him, he looks to have mastered heavy braking and acceleration on the circuit's long straightaways that lead into tight chicanes.

Meanwhile, Rival engine manufacturers Honda and Renault are pressing ahead with planned power-unit upgrades this weekend.

Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel, of Germany, waits as mechanics work on his vehicle during the second practice session at the Canadian Grand Prix, Friday, June 8, 2018, in Montreal.

Schumacher, Vettel, Damon Hill, Jacques Villeneuve and Jenson Button are just some of the names to have left their mark over the years.

"I've enjoyed some great races in Canada and I won there in 2006, so it's a special place for me".

Whether it will be a productive one for the team remains to be seen.

The decision affects also Williams and Force India as well as the works team.

"It's one that I've always loved driving on".

Also, there will be focus on engine upgrades and what's going on with Pirelli's hyper-soft tires.

But others have also found the track to their liking including two of Hamilton's biggest challengers.

Stroll earned his first F1 points at the Canadian Grand Prix previous year.

That emotionally charged weekend was capped off by a sixth win in Canada.

Bottas played down the delay to the new engine, saying it would have been only "a small gain compared to the old one" anyway.

From the midfield, expect Esteban Ocon, Carlos Sainz, and Pierre Gasly to put in a strong performance and complete our quintet.
