BlackBerry Key2 vs BlackBerry KEYone: What are the differences?
Jun 10, 2018, 02:45
For the first time on a BlackBerry, the KEY2 comes with dual-cameras at the rear.
While BlackBerry no longer makes smartphones, it does license its name to a company called TCL which makes Androiddevices that carry the branding - and sometimes, a physical keyboard.
TCL has continued where it left off on the KEYone previous year with the KEY2 which comes with a familiar design tweaked at places where it matters, dual cameras, an improved chipset with the right kind of specifications and the traditional keyboard with keys that are 20-percent larger than the ones on its predecessor. It uses Series 7 aluminium for its frame and a soft touch back with a new diamond pattern. The handset retains the 4.5-inch display with 1080x1620 pixels and 3:2 aspect ratio.
Other specs include a Snapdragon 660, 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. There's also 64 or 128GB of storage with microSD card expansion.
Privacy and security have always been a focus on BlackBerry devices and the KEY2 is no exception. Instead of a glossy exterior, the physical keyboard throws a matte-like feel so as to feel softer while typing. There's a 12-megapixel main shooter with a secondary 12-megapixel camera that offers 2x optical zoom and enables portrait mode.
Overall, the Key2 does seem to be a decent upgrade over the KeyOne, even though the display size and resolution remain the same. BlackBerry also teased it'll be available on carriers and sim-free.
New on the KEY2 is a speed key which works like a Function key. Previous year the smartphone company had launched BlackBerry KEYone which is the predecessor to the latest release.
The Blackberry Key2 will cost $829 in Canada. The entire device is powered by a 3,500 mAh battery which supports Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0. There's also a new private locker feature that allows you to lock away files like before, but will now let you lock individual apps behind a password or fingerprint scan.
BlackBerry devices have always been about getting things done efficiently, but not necessarily about being the most powerful devices around.
BlackBerry KEY2 is wrapped in Corning's Gorilla Glass with the textured back panel in two colour options of black and silver. The Speed Key will support a total of 52 customizable shortcuts, like accessing apps or calling contacts.
Software: The BlackBerry KEY2 runs Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box and a near stock version at that.
The BlackBerry Key2 will start shipping in the United Kingdom this month with a starting price of £579 SIM-free.
