Porsche Taycan name announced for 2019 Mission E electric GT vehicle

The name can be roughly translated as "lively young horse", referencing the imagery at the heart of the Porsche crest, which has featured a leaping steed since 1952.

Despite its sports vehicle shape, the auto will have four doors.

What else do we know about the Taycan?

Porsche has billed the Taycan as a track-capable EV, created to support multiple jump starts in quick succession without power loss due to battery overheating.

The company also marked the occasion by revealing a 911 Speedster Concept, an open-top version of its iconic sports auto.

Porsche has said battery-only vehicles could account for a quarter of its sales by 2025. Porsche CEO Oliver Blume told us: "We will think of different options and there will be more than one, with different levels of power".

Porsche is doubling down on electric cars, saying it will pour over €6 billion (about $7.1 million) into electromobility by 2022.

The central location of the batteries and twin-motor set-up will also give the car's technical architecture a better front-rear weight balance than combustion-engined cars, potentially allowing Porsche's engineers to soften the car's anti-roll bars to aid ride without hindering handling.

Porsche has been using the Mission E codename quite publicly for a couple years now, since the concept's first debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2015. There will likely be more extreme versions of this auto in the future.

Porsche has revealed the name of the production Mission E all-electric sedan, which will launch as the 2020 Porsche Taycan.

Over-the-air updates will be possible on the Porsche Taycan, upgrading on-board infotainment systems and safety tech, but also offering to boost power if the customer wishes.

When the battery is depleted, it can be rapidly recharged in just a matter of minutes. The company says the Taycan will be able to go from 0 to 100 kph in 3.5 seconds and will have a range of 500 km and rapid 800-volt charging.
