Key Senate Republicans seek to challenge Trump over tariffs

Schumer, D-N.Y., speaks to the press after the Senate Democratic policy lunch in the Capitol on May 8. While the Senate will use the extra time in hopes to confirm as many of President Trump's judicial and executive branch nominees as they can, the recess cancellation will also keep incumbent Democrats off the campaign trail in a contentious midterm election cycle.

But others are taking advantage of the added time to push for more action on an issue they know caused Republicans a lot of grief in the past year: health care.

Sen. Chris Van Hollen, the Democrat from Maryland who is the chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, is portraying the schedule change as an opportunity for legislating and messaging.

Aides and lawmakers said the March effort had to some degree succeeded, with the White House crafting exemptions for several close allies - until the administration announced those exemptions for the EU, Mexico and Canada lapsed this week. Instead, he said the chamber needed to spend the extra time passing legislation important to Americans.

In a statement on May 24, Corker said that President Trump "abusing the authorities granted to him in Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962" was part of "a risky course and should be abandoned immediately".

Both types of plans do not have to comply with the 2010 law's strict coverage requirements, so healthy people might see it as a more affordable option.

"They are just so terrified about talking about women's health, talking about women's rights, talking about all of these things in 2018", Stewart-Cousins said, "that they'd rather just walk away". "Americans deserve representatives who put in the work necessary to accomplish what they were sent to Washington to get done", he said.

Women's groups and some Democratic senators have accused the Republicans of being patronizing to Hochul.

"We now have confirmed 21 circuit court judges in the first year and a half of the Trump administration, breaking all modern records", the majority leader said.

Durbin isn't just waiting on Republicans to let Congress discuss health care.

Schumer, of NY, said Democrats were instead building out their messaging and platform on issues like health care and infrastructure to rebuild a national coalition that can win, while their attacks on Trump in 2016 led to the party's sweeping losses.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Tuesday he would not allow the Corker tariff proposal to be brought up as a freestanding bill. "Senators should expect to remain in session in August to pass legislation, including appropriations bills, and to make additional progress on the president's nominees", McConnell said in a statement. "I think he's way too intelligent to get us into a trade war". The Senate and House are both trying to pass the annual 12 spending bills ahead of the September 30 fiscal year deadline.

This year, GOP lawmakers plan to bundle the spending bills into smaller packages.

Congress' August recess normally is closely guarded as a time for lawmakers to take foreign "fact-finding" trips, campaign for re-election and ramp up their campaign fundraising operations.

"I don't think there is a legislative response", Texas Sen.

While analysts have argued the Democrats are less likely to take back the Senate than the House, recent polls have indicated that their chances of retaking the Senate "are looking stronger" as the November midterms approach.
