Val Kilmer's iconic character Iceman will return in Top Gun 2

Iceman's role in the new film has not been revealed, but the story line for the Top Gun sequel follows Cruise's Maverick character as he mentors a new generation of young U.S. Navy fighter pilots.

It seemed insane that anyone might make a sequel to 1986's Top Gun without including Val Kilmer's Iceman, but then again, it seemed insane that anyone might make a sequel to 1986's Top Gun after Tony Scott died, and look where that assumption got us.

The actor confirmed Top Gun: Maverick was officially a go a year ago. In the original, Kilmer's Tom "Iceman" Kazansky and Cruise's Pete "Maverick" Mitchell were rivals (with Iceman telling Maverick "I don't like you because you're dangerous") but eventually begrudgingly earned each other's respect. Indeed, Paramount hasn't even confirmed any casting beyond Cruise, so Kilmer is the first name we've heard of joining the production.

Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion, TRON: Legacy) is set to direct the film, while Jerry Bruckheimer and Tom Cruise will produce. As for the plot of the film, details are still being kept under wraps. As automation and technology have advanced, pilots are becoming a thing of the past as unmanned drones are the hope of the future.

Kilmer was spotted in the San Diego hotel headquarters where Top Gun: Maverick filming is underway.

The movie will include another original member - for the soundtrack - because Kenny Loggins is back, too!

Tom Cruise has found a familiar wingman for Top Gun 2.
