New AMD Ryzen Threadripper Has 32 Cores, 64 Threads

AMD this week promised to ship 32-core Ryzen Threadripper 2 processors in the third quarter of 2018 - one day after Intel bragged about a forthcoming 28-core part.

While the Radeon Instinct indicates that AMD is making good progress on its shift to 7nm, fanboys and gamers in particular will be disappointed. AMD designed this coherent interconnect to facilitate communication between its components inside discrete packages, as we see with the Ryzen and Threadripper processors.

AMD for instance unleashed Threadripper Gen2 at 32-cores utilizing 12nm process technology, leveraging a "cost effective multi-die packaging" strategy.

Based on the Zen+ microarchitecture that AMD debuted with its more mainstream Ryzen 2 CPUs earlier this year, the Threadrippers will be manufactured to Globalfoundries' 12nm FinFET process. It will use the same TR4 socket allowing customers to shift from one Threadripper generation to the next. Due to this, several motherboard vendors reported that some of the current X399 motherboards on the market might struggle with power delivery to the new parts, and so we are likely to see a motherboard refresh. The world's first 7 nm GPU though, the Vega-based Radeon Instinct was also shown off to the crowd and it was announced it will be launched to server and workstation form factors 2H 2018. AMD had working samples at the Computex event, crunching away in Blender with a live demo.

The new Threadripper CPUs will launch in Q3 this year.

AMD also discussed where its graphics line is going in the future.

Also to make a name for itself is the Radeon RX Vega 56 which was unveiled by AMD in collaboration with PowerColor.

"We're committed to bringing new products every year, consistently every year", Wang said.

AMD's top Radeon executive made the argument that gaming and gaming GPUs assist everything from movies to social interaction, especially by virtually blasting each other in games like Fortnite. It will be complemented with an open software ecosystem for machine learning, Wang said.

Another unique aspect with the chip is that it comes with 32 GB of HBM2 memory, which is another reason the chip is quite expansive in its proportions.
