John Bolton Will Be in Singapore for North Korea Summit

But it's another issue that will top Abe's agenda when he meets Trump for less than two hours at the White House on Thursday: The fate of 12 Japanese citizens abducted in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

"At a minimum we'll start with perhaps a good relationship, and that's something that's very important toward the ultimate making of a deal. We're looking at it, we're talking about it with a lot of other people", Trump told reporters on Thursday.

"The hard part is after that".

The conservative Abe is anxious that Trump may move to normalize relations with North Korea and could pull back from its military commitments to both Japan and South Korea.

He said a letter he received last week from Kim was "warm".

"I think there will be compromise on the principle of full denuclearization and a security guarantee", said Yang Moo-jin, who teaches at the University of North Korean Studies.

Trump also hinted that he and Kim Jong-Un could sign an agreement to end the Korean War at their meeting.

Christopher Hill, the lead U.S. negotiator with North Korea during the George W Bush administration, said a summit with the North had always been available to United States leaders.

North Korea defends its nuclear and missile programmes as a deterrent against what it sees as USA aggression. "We're talking about it with them".

Mueller is investigating whether Trump associates coordinated with Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential election and whether Trump took steps to shut down that investigation through actions, including the firing of FBI Director James Comey.

Trump even said that if the negotiations are successful he would invite Kim to the White House.

Pompeo, however, added that the U.S. would work to guarantee North Korea's security should it denuclearise.

The president said he was also optimistic about a normalisation of diplomatic relations with North Korea in the long term.

"We would certainly like to see normalization, yes, " Trump said following two hours of meetings with visiting Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. National Security Council spokesman Garrett Marquis noted the president met with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Adviser John Bolton on Thursday afternoon "to continue their strategic discussions" ahead of the summit. "If they don't denuclearise that will not be acceptable". The White House has not confirmed that anyone outside of the official government will participate in the meeting itself.

Of the summit, set for June 12 in Singapore, Mr Trump said: "It's going to be much more than a photo op".

The US has stressed that it is seeking complete and verifiable denuclearisation of North Korea, but a week ahead of the summit, questions remain about whether Kim is truly committed to achieving that aim.

He said Mr. Trump has considerable leverage in the negotiations and plenty of offers to dangle in front of Mr. Kim.

"We are not quite certain if that is still the policy or whether by Trump saying take your time to North Korea he is indicated a phased, more methodical implementation", he said.
