Miss America pageant dropping the swimsuits and evening gowns

The almost century-old Miss America competition will drop its well-known swimsuit competition this year and will no longer judge contestants based on their physical appearance, a top organisation official said on Tuesday.

The Miss America Organization's announcement Tuesday to drop the bathing suit competition after almost 100 years - and not judge women on their appearances but rather their goals and passion for performing the duties of Miss America - came as a surprise to people like McKinney, executive director for five local scholarship competitions, including Miss Piedmont Region, Miss Greater Richmond, Miss Cardinal, Miss Dominion and Miss State Fair of Virginia.

The competition's contestants - representatives of all 50 USA states - "will be asked to demonstrate their passion, intelligence and overall understanding of the job of Miss America", the show reported. This effectively ensures that the swimsuit competition will no longer be an aspect of the competition.

The Miss America telecast will still have an evening-wear competition but contestants will be encouraged to "outwardly express their self-confidence in evening attire of their choosing", the org stated.

Carlson says that the pageant wants to be "open, transparent and inclusive to women who may not have felt comfortable participating in our program before".

Women competing in the annual Miss America pageant will no longer be judged on how well they can parade around the stage in their swimsuits.

The changes were announced via the official Miss America Twitter account, which also tweeted a short video of a white bikini going up in a puff of smoke with the hashtag #byebyebikini. "You don't have to anymore".

The competition began almost 100 years ago in Atlantic City, New Jersey, as a bathing beauty contest created to keep tourists coming to the seaside resort the weekend after Labor Day. While much less harmless, contestants will be asked, instead to present themselves in clothing that they feel shows their personal style and that they feel good in. The competition will also focus on their social-impact initiatives.

Carlson said: 'It's what comes out of their mouths that we care about'.

As someone who's been a leader in the fight against sexual misconduct, suing former Fox News CEO Roger Ailes who eventually resigned, Carlson said it's given her perspective on the competition's evolution.

While Miss America is part scholarship program, part pageant and has included talent and speaking portions in the past, it is, by far, a young ladies' beauty competition. Miss America has been losing viewers for over a decade, especially among the coveted 18- to 49-year-old demographic.

At the same time, the organization announced that a "Miss America 2.0" website and campaign would be launching soon.

Miss America-the first modern beauty pageant-will no longer be about, ahem, beauty.
