DELICIOUS DIPLOMACY: Kim Jong Un Hopes to Open MCDONALD’S in North Korea

Singapore will foot North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's astronomical hotel bill when he stays there for a summit with U.S. President Donald Trump on June 12.

In preparation for the Singapore summit, Kim Jong Un has reportedly shaken up North Korea's military leadership-though it's not clear whether it's the kind of reshuffle that involves executions or mere demotions.

A report by South Korea's Yonhap news agency cites an unnamed intelligence source as confirming the information.

All three of the new officials have at least some experience interacting with foreign delegations, a factor that is critical as Kim seeks to line up meetings with leaders from the United States, China, Russia, and Syria.

In particular, the military's General Political Bureau (GPB) is responsible for auditing and overseeing the financial operations of the KPA, which controls a large number of trading corporations and other businesses which could be highly involved in any future inter-Korean trade or infrastructure projects.

All of the newly promoted officials are younger than their predecessors, including 63-year-old Ri Yong Gil, who is 21 years younger than Ri Myong Su.

Meanwhile, the release of six South Korean citizens detained in the North was discussed at the high-level inter-Korean talks on Friday, according to the Unification Ministry.

"The president has been receiving daily briefings on North Korea from his national security team", Sanders said.

Ri Yong Gil served as chief of staff from 2013 to 2016 until he reportedly fell from grace for a brief period, the analysts said.

They added that the GPB could be influential enough to resist leadership policy decisions and try to profit from future South Korean economic aid.

The changes are a shock because they take place so close to each other and come just ahead of the scheduled June 12 summit between Trump and Kim in Singapore.

"Schumer also warned Monday that Democrats would be watching the progress of negotiations to ensure their principles are met, and that "if we think that the president is veering off-course, we would not hesitate to move" to increase mandatory sanctions against North Korea or otherwise make it impossible for the president to use his waiver authority".

Avoiding the political embarrassment of another abrupt US withdrawal from the planned summit could also underlie Seoul's caution, said Kim Meen-geon, a professor of political science at Kyung Hee University in Seoul.

The removal of top North Korean military officials from their positions is inviting speculation about internal instability in the Kim Jong Un regime.

As The New York Times noted on Sunday, Pyongyang has been known to compel other governments or organizations to foot the bill when its officials travel overseas.

United States officials believe there has been some dissent in the North Korean military about Kim's overtures to Seoul and Washington. "They know to sit there and not get too drunk at the parties. they know how to behave themselves".
