Sixers consider dismissing Bryan Colangelo over Twitter scandal, ESPN reports

The Sixers' Twitter investigation is reportedly taking on a new focus, and sources say it doesn't look good for President of Basketball Operations Bryan Colangelo.

The probe hasn't been completed, and a final decision has yet to be rendered, but the fallout from a report by The Ringer that connected Twitter accounts unleashing privileged information and provocative attacks surrounding the Sixers has left ownership flushed with embarrassment and anger - and Colangelo fighting for his professional life, league sources said.

Colangelo, a two-time NBA Executive of the Year, allegedly directed ownership to his wife, Barbara Bottini, for being involved in the Twitter posts, according to the report. Ownership is reportedly anxious the timing of the incident may hurt the Sixers in their possible pursuit of free agents such as LeBron James and Paul George this summer.

The 76ers are expected to finish their investigation into allegations against Bryan Colangelo within the next few days, if not Friday, according to league sources.

After the initial story about Colangelo and the burner accounts broke, Internet sleuths began poking around the information about the accounts and discovered Bottini has a phone number that shares characteristics with three of the five burner accounts in question.

The Sixers have hired an outside law firm out of NY to handle the investigation. He never tweeted from that account.

In scrolling through Reuben's many comments, there's gossip and criticism about everyone affiliated (or recently affiliated) with the Sixers except one person: Colangelo, who gets only praise.

Numerous players and league sources suggested in the last two days that it will be hard for Colangelo to keep his position with the Sixers as a result of the report.

On Thursday, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver responded to the controversy at a news conference.

"Well, for the league there is always that balance of speed and doing things in a deliberate and appropriate way", Silver said.

The executive described Colangelo as somewhat emotional and as someone who pays close attention to what is being said about him. "So I have talked to management at the 76ers, and the notion here was let's find out what's going on".

"I don't believe the story".
