Real Madrid coach Zidane calls surprise press conference

The former-France midfielder called a press conference in the Spanish capital on Thursday morning where he delivered the news.

"It can be a "see you later", Madrid has given me everything, I will be close to this club all my life". "I know it's a odd moment, but I think it's the best for all. I had to do this for everyone".

Guy Lacombe, Zinedine Zidane's first coach when he joined AS Cannes told AFP Zidane would like one day to coach the French national team.

Real have reportedly touted Arsene Wenger on several occasions in the past, not least in 2009 when president Perez said he "liked" the then-Arsenal boss and had "talked to him a lot".

Here is a Zidane fan who is still in disbelief of what he has just seen/heard...

Zidane's decision to quit came after Cristiano Ronaldo hinted he could be leaving the club. They have always backed me.

We look at the contenders to become the next Real Madrid manager following Zinedine Zidane's surprise decision to leave. I thank you all for your support and there are hard times when there are whistles but that is part of this club.

It appears as if Zidane wanted to move on from the club on a high.

The 45-year-old Frenchman led Real to their fourth Champions League trophy in five years - and third under his management - by masterminding victory over Liverpool in Kiev on Saturday, but Los Blancos could only finish third in LaLiga. He said: "It's not as simple as just staying". It has been impossible to convince him. I am a victor, I like winning and hate losing. It is the moment to make a change.

"It was a huge impact for me yesterday when I heard this decision". There was no backward step. This team must continue winning and it needs a change that will be good for everyone.

"After three years it needs another voice, another method of work, for this I took this decision", said Zidane. "It's my decision, it could be wrong". I did it as a player, and now again as a coach.

Real Madrid now is left scrambling to find its next manager. I have shared the transfers and telling players bad news with the president.

"I think he wasn't the right man for a coach in that he wasn't really happy in that position".
