Disney's China Puzzle Unsolved as Another ‘Star Wars’ Film Flops

Some skeptics may claim that the sour "Solo" box office points to Star Wars fatigue, but the true test of that won't come for almost 19 months, when J.J. Abrams's "Star Wars: Episode IX", the final installment of Disney's first main trilogy, opens right before Christmas.

The origin story scripted by father and son Jonathan and Lawrence Kasdan, which reportedly carries the hefty price tag of $US300 million, ranked at No. 1 in most territories but it was just the fourth-biggest opening weekend of the year in Oz. For comparison, the three other Disney/Lucasfilm features, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, have all opened to $247.9 million, $155 million, and $220 million respectively at the domestic box office.

The news is worse internationally, with the film falling well short of estimates, bringing in just $65 million. All three of Disney's previous Star Wars movies made more domestically in their opening weekends than Solo did worldwide.

But the film, with a cast including Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson and Emilia Clarke, was falling short not only in North America, box office tracker Exhibitor Relations predicted, but also overseas. "(Lucasfilm and Disney) need to give it some space and time over the next year and a half to build back up that sense of excitement and that audience anticipation".

Bock also questions whether Solo suffered from a bad release date - or an underlying "content" problem. Memorial Day is a risky time to open because theaters are competing with travel plans. If you're eager to learn how Han Solo met Chewie and became the charming smuggler we all know and love, Solo: A Star Wars Story is now in theaters.

To say Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi had a polarizing effect on Star Wars fans would be an understatement.

Meanwhile, Harrison Ford has given his verdict on Solo: A Star Wars Story, with the film's director Ron Howard claiming that the actor was "raving about it" after seeing the finished version.

One potential issue for the movie was when it was released. It's more frivolous than films like Rogue One, and it's receiving mixed reviews.

"We're going to judge "Solo" by where we finish rather than where we start", said Dave Hollis, Disney's president of theatrical distribution.

According to Fortune, the film amassed $83.3 million in North American box office sales.

So, it's three for three when it comes to heroes in the Star Wars universe deceiving their opponents by using Chewie as misdirection.
