Alberto forecast: More rain to hit South Florida Monday night

An EOSDIS satellite's view of subtropical storm Alberto to the south west of the Florida seen in a handout photo made available by Nasa Worldview, on May 27, 2018, by the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Forecasters say the Florida Panhandle can expect between 4 and 8 inches of rain from Alberto, and a storm surge of anywhere from 2 to 4 feet.

Alberto - the first named storm of the 2018 hurricane season that officially starts June 1 - is expected to strengthen until it reaches the northern Gulf Coast, likely on Monday night.

Subtropical Storm Alberto - the first named storm of the 2018 hurricane season that starts June 1 - prompted Florida, Alabama and MS to launch emergency preparations Saturday.

"The potential for flash flooding, mudslides and landslides will be very high in the [North Carolina] mountains", Panovich said. "After landfall, the system is forecast to move well inland into the Tennessee Valley on Tuesday and into the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes region on Wednesday and Thursday".

Florida, Alabama and MS launched emergency preparations on Saturday.

Currently, the storm is located just to the northwest of Cuba and classed as "subtropical".

The heaviest rain bands and strongest winds began coming ashore around 10 a.m. Monday in Panama City Beach.

The mayor of Orange Beach, on Alabama's Gulf Coast, said Alberto brought rain and aggravation - and dashed hopes for record crowds. States of emergency have been declared in Florida, Mississippi and Alabama. The storm's approach also triggered mandatory evacuations of some small, sparsely populated Gulf Coast barrier islands in one Florida county. The storm was moving north at about 14 miles per hour, he added, "so not real fast". We could see 2-3 inches of rain on average.

Alberto disrupted long Memorial Day holiday weekend plans along from Pensacola in the Florida Panhandle to Miami Beach and other areas along the northern Gulf Coast, forced beachgoers out of the the water and prompted evacuations of low-lying areas.

The risk of flash flooding was only marginal -5 percent- in the Lowcountry as of Monday morning.

Duffey said the storm is expected to remain relatively mild.

The storm's maximum sustained winds are near 45 miles per hour.

In late May 2016, Tropical Storm Bonnie hit parts of the Southeastern United States and the Bahamas, costing more than $640,000 in damage and causing two deaths.

"Heavy rains and gusty winds continue to spread northward over Florida", it tweeted.

The early storm doesn't necessarily mean hurricane season will be as busy as last year's though.
