Indianapolis 500: Danica Patrick crashes out in final race of her career

Though Patrick's full-time racing career might be over, her time in the spotlight is not. She created the "Danica Double" as a farewell tour, running one final time in the Daytona 500 and the Indy 500.

She may now turn to her acting and voice-over career, which has seen numerous appearances as herself on talk shows, reality series and hosting gigs.

"I just can't believe it", he said after the race.

"I'm not really sure what happened", a dejected Patrick said after coming out of the care center. There still were a lot of great moments this month, a lot of great moments this year.

The rest of the field missed Patrick as she came to rest on the infield grass. She finished 30th in the 33-car race won by Team Penske's Will Power. "But probably anything in between might just be a little part of a big story, so I kind of feel like that's how it is".

"He was so determined for this one", she said.

"If I win, people will remember that".

An IndyCar series champion and four times runner-up, Power delivered a cool, calculated drive on a sizzling hot day to reach Victory Lane, becoming the first Australian to win the famed race and giving owner Roger Penske his 17th Indy 500 success.

As Power held off pole victor Ed Carpenter to win his first Indy 500, the 81-year-old Penske pumped his fist in the air and clapped for his driver.

Patrick then spun into the outside wall of Turn 2 on lap 68 of 200, having dropped her left-front tyre over the white line, but was at a loss to explain the crash.

Patrick, who shot to prominence by finishing fourth as a rookie in 2005, announced earlier this year that she would step away from racing after Sunday's race.

" I'm just... 'I have to get these guys, I don't know how much fuel they've got, but this is the restart of my life.' With one to go, I'm screaming 'I've got this.' Unbelievable. I am at a lack of words today", she wrote.

Among other drivers who exited due to mishaps were three-time victor Helio Castroneves (lap 147) and 2013 victor Tony Kanaan (188). Rossi had no choice: It was hard to pass in the 2018 auto on a day that fell just 2 degrees short - it was 91 degrees - of being the hottest 500 in history.
