Fiat Chrysler warns 4.8M owners: Don’t use the cruise

The FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) group issued a massive recall of around 4.8 million vehicles today over a software problem that could prevent drivers from turning off the cruise control system on their vehicle.

In a consumer advisory, the NHTSA noted that the affected vehicles range from 2014 to 2018 and include four Dodge models, six Ram models, three Jeep models and three Chrysler models.

FCA stated that recalls of the models listed will also be issued in Canada and Mexico, as well as in Europe where some Fiat Freemont models (the European version of the Dodge Journey) will be subject to the recall.

The problem occurs when the vehicle is forced to accelerate while cruise control is engaged, something that might happen while it's climbing a steep hill, for instance.

When a vehicle's cruise control is working properly, the driver can set a preferred speed until the brakes are tapped. The company also notes drivers can shift the vehicle into neutral and then brake accordingly. "Regardless of the mitigation strategy, the vehicle may be placed in park once it has stopped, at which point cruise-control is cancelled".

The flaw was initially discovered after Fiat Chrysler, which is also known as FCA, tested the vehicles' computer network.

Shares of Fiat are down 2.47% in premarket trading in the U.S.

Though there are no known incidents or injuries so far, the company took the pre-emptive step amid concerns that vehicles are not slowing automatically when in cruise control mode. Fiat Chrysler says it can fix the issue with a software update. "It was still running at an engine speed to support 70 miles per hour and fighting the brakes".

A auto company is recalling almost 5 million vehicles because of a safety issue. The fix will, unsurprisingly, be installed free of charge, and the automaker will begin alerting those customers affected from next week.

Fiat says a "widespread network" of dealers are prepared to help. The company is urging customers to follow the recall instructions and get the repairs done as soon as possible.
