Alonso: That was probably F1's dullest race ever

Much of the race was dictated Daniel Ricciardo's wounded auto at the front, which had been down on power due to an MGU-K issue.

Ricciardo's advantage was slightly narrower than practice lap times had suggested, though, with Sebastian Vettel less than a quarter of a second adrift in second. After taking the chequered flag at the end of the race, Ricciardo sounded exasperated on the team radio before uttering the word "redemption" - summing up the importance of the victory to the Australian.

With Hamilton persevering with to stall over a brand new contract at Mercedes, hypothesis is rife about his future, even whether it is anticipated he'll prolong his keep.

Ricciardo, who was nursing an MGU-K issue for most of the race, admitted the circuit layout allowed him to get away with maintaining a slow pace out front.

Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen agreed that the race had not been exciting, having started and finished in the same position - fourth - after one pitstop.

Fernando Alonso was another driver who also reported problems before a gearbox issue finally forced him out of the race.

German Nico Hülkenberg in the second Renault narrowly missed out on the top 10 shootout for pole position, finishing 11th fastest in the second segment of qualifying.

Spaniard Carlos Sainz took the final point for Renault.

"It's frustrating with such a fast vehicle not to have both cars on the front row of the grid".

Hamilton, in third place, kicked off the pit stops on Lap 12 but filtered back onto the track behind Ocon and lost any advantage from an undercut.

The result means that Hamilton still tops the drivers' championship but sees his lead over Vettel cut to 14 points. When we pitted early, I thought it was a two-stop but we were able to manage it. That is a question for him, and whether he wants to continue racing or change teams.

"He's got Sebastian Vettel breathing down his neck, he can not make a mistake".

"You have got do spectacular laps on Saturday afternoon". It was yet another mistake from the Kiwi in what is becoming a run of missed opportunities for the Le Mans victor.

However it was not a race without its problems for the Red Bull driver, who drove away from his pole position start easily before news of a power issue put his redemption in doubt.

"We had problems", Ricciardo said after the race.

Stoffel Vandoorne: "This was a disappointing race for me".

We were just cruising around from lap six, literally cruising. We got it back. "I'm pumped, it's been a good few days".

Daniel Ricciardo won his seventh career race in Monaco. "A lot of Aussie flags on the in lap".

That VSC was caused by Charles Leclerc enduring a brake failure and steaming into the back of Brendon Hartley as they exited the tunnel, in a race that scarcely created drama and produced 19 finishers. The incident left debris scattered across the braking zone, but the marshals were able to clear the pieces of carbon fibre under a virtual safety vehicle, meaning a full safety auto - which would have allowed Vettel to close on the back of Ricciardo - was not required. He had driven absolutely perfectly all weekend up to that point - and after that terrible pit stop robbed him of the win back in 2016 his heart must have been in his mouth.
