Unexpected airport arrival: Dog gives birth at Tampa International

Ellie the service dog was accompanying a passenger en route to Philadelphia when her litter decided it was time to make its entrance into the world.

A service dog went into labor and delivered eight puppies in the middle of a terminal at Tampa International Airport on Friday. The father of the puppies - a dog named Golden Nugget - was also present at the scene of the delivery.

Tampa Fire Rescue arrived to help deliver the pups right in the middle of the terminal in front of Gate 80.

Photos and a video of the incident were uploaded on the fire department's Twitter page under the hashtag "AirportPuppies".

"I've never seen anything like this in an airport, or otherwise", she said. The women said that they knew "Ellie" the yellow Lab was pregnant, but they were not aware of how close she apparently was to giving birth.

It was hard to control the father of the puppies during the delivery. Seven males, and one female. Airlines don't generally allow pups to fly until they are 8 weeks old, so the family will have to find another way there - with 10 dogs instead of two.
