NYT Columnist Worries Mueller Investigation Actually Helping Trump

Two Republican lawmakers, and no Democrats, are expected to attend a meeting that has been scheduled for Thursday to allow them to review classified information relating to claims the Federal Bureau of Investigation used an informant to gather information on Trump's presidential campaign, the White House said on Tuesday.

The order to broker the meeting, slated for Thursday, came after Trump met Monday with FBI Director Christopher Wray and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, a session the president on Tuesday described as "routine". Devin Nunes and Trey Gowdy as well as FBI Director Christopher Wray, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and Ed O'Callaghan of the Justice Department will be attending. The White House then said Monday that Trump chief of staff John Kelly would organize the meeting to review the documents. She said the officials will "review highly classified and other information they have requested", but did not provide additional detail.

The Justice Department said the agency's inspector general tasked with conducting oversight of the department would look into the questions raised by Trump as part of its ongoing investigation into the government surveillance of former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser Carter Page during the presidential campaign.

The former contractor, from a USA government agency Caputo refrained from naming, had contacted a friend of Caputo's on May 6, 2016, and told him the agency had emails and wanted to get them to the Trump campaign.

The group, some of the president's most vocal supporters on Capitol Hill, have vented about the Mueller investigation and DOJ for months, accusing the department of not fulfilling requests for documents and information and its senior officials and some investigators of political bias, citing some members' donations to Democrats and Democratic causes. Schiff and other committee Democrats were furious and argued that Republicans had not subpoenaed many witnessed they considered essential to the committee's work.

On Sunday, legal experts wondered how the Trump-appointed heads of the FBI and DOJ would respond to his demand for an investigation into the probe looking at his campaign if the Justice Department's accommodation ends up not being enough.

And Trump has taken up the cause as the White House tries to combat the threat posed by special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into potential ties between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

Caputo said he has told the House Intelligence and Senate Intelligence Committees about the offer, as well as the special counsel team led by Robert Mueller.

Nunes has demanded the Justice Department hand over records related to the Russian Federation investigation, including the unredacted memo outlining the scope of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's authority and the name of an informant the FBI used when it began a counterintelligence investigation of Trump's campaign in 2016. The FBI declined to comment.

White House officials also won't participate.

"Excuse me, I have the President of South Korea here", he said.

Former FBI Director James Comey later testified to Congress that internal reviews found no information to support the president's tweets.

From Carol: "These people know they did wrong, to have Clinton as president".
