Loved Ones Remember A Legend In the Full Whitney Trailer

A new documentary film about Whitney Houston, which made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this week, alleges that the singer suffered sexual abuse at the hands of her cousin, Dee Dee Warwick. The alleged abuse, revealed in the film by Houston's longtime assistant Mary Jones, is said to have caused Houston to question her own sexuality and may have contributed to her well-documented substance abuse problem.

Jones said Houston was ashamed to reveal the incident to anyone, and used to say, "I wonder if I did something to make [Dee Dee] think I wanted her".

Robyn has never confirmed or denied the allegations about her relationship with the "I Will Always Love You" singer, but their friendship did abruptly end shortly before Houston's death. The film includes a number of interviews with Houston's relatives and those who were close to her, as well as unseen footage of The Bodyguard singer. Houston died in 2012 - at 48 - after being discovered submerged in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Macdonald went into making this documentary with the initial hopes of cleaning the tarnished, addiction-riddled image of Houston that plagued her later years until her sad and untimely death.

"She determined this was the elephant within the room that no one wished to speak about, this was the factor that to her - she had a sister who had been abused in her childhood, and she or he felt so strongly that this was the factor that was the catalyst of so many issues in Whitney's life", Macdonald stated.

Whitney is released in United Kingdom cinemas on July 6th. I said, 'One day when you get the nerve, you need to tell your mother. He said his sister was abused, too.

Representatives for the Houston estate, the film's production companies and distributors, and Houston's ex-husband, Bobby Brown, did not immediately respond to a request for comment from TheWrap. They offer a rare glimpse into Whitney's upbringing, with Whitney herself pointing to the pressure she felt to be great in a family of singers.

Dee Dee Warwick was the niece of Cissy Houston and, like others in the family, also was a singer.

"There was something very disturbed about her, because she was never comfortable in her own skin", the documentary's director Kevin Macdonald told Vanity Fair in an interview Wednesday.

It would mean that the singer would have been a toddler at the time of the alleged abuse. It seems the interviewee's in the film see her stepping down for him as a reason as well.

She made her first TV appearance in 1965, appearing alongside Dionne on NBC's Hullbaloo to perform a gospel song called Children, Go Where I Send Thee. Dee Dee is said to have struggled with narcotics addition and died in 2008, aged 63.

Her presence is still very much felt and this documentary seems like the flawless, or as close to ideal, representation of her truth.
