Hamas issues call for further violence along Gaza border

It also called on Israel to respect the basic human rights of Palestinians as well as worldwide law.

The Arab League held an emergency meeting of foreign ministers in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday, to debate how to deal with the United States move and the ensuing violence in the Palestinian Territory.

According to al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida, Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah to visit Istanbul to attend, on behalf of President Mahmoud Abbas, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation's extraordinary session over Gaza.

He also took aim at the United States for shifting its embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv, terming it violation of worldwide law contravention of the UN Charter's prohibition of the forcible acquisition of territory.

Israel's Embassy in New Zealand has hit back after our Government described the loss of life on the Gaza-Israel border as "one-sided".

Earlier this week, Kuwait's UN Ambassador Mansour Otaibi said he would call for a multilateral force to be deployed in Gaza for the "protection of Palestinian civilians", though he added "we're not talking about peacekeeping".

Hamas denied the claim, although Hamas leader Yehya Sinwar told Al Jazeera television that Egypt had expressed interest in improving the conditions in Gaza and avoiding further bloodshed on the border.

The Palestinian demonstrators were killed in clashes with Israeli troops during protests to mark the 70th anniversary of Nakba - the expulsion of Palestinians from their homes - and the opening of the US Embassy in Jerusalem.

On Friday, some 15,000 Palestinian protesters started fires on the Palestinian side of the crossing, damaging gas pipelines leading to the enclave, the IDF said. "Canada calls for an immediate independent investigation to thoroughly examine the facts on the ground - including any incitement, violence, and the excessive use of force".

Avi Benlolo - CEO of the Friends of the Simon Wiesenthal Center - said that "Canada should steadfastly condemn Hamas for inciting violence and for attempting to enter a sovereign nation to carry out terrorism..."

But human rights groups say the identity of slain protesters, including a possible affiliation to a militant group, is irrelevant if they were unarmed and did not pose an immediate threat to the lives of soldiers when they were shot. Some of the Palestinians at the border, including terrorist operatives, attacked Israeli soldiers with Molotov cocktails and other weapons as they attempted to breach the border fence.

Hamas denies Israeli accusations of orchestrating the demonstrations, saying it supports them but that they were organised independently.
