Saudi Air Defenses Intercept Houthi Ballistic Missile Fired at Jizan

Yemen's armed Houthi movement launched a missile at a distribution centre belonging to oil giant Saudi Aramco in Saudi Arabia's southwestern Jizan province today, the group's Al-Masirah TV reported.

Turki al-Malki, a spokesman for a Saudi-led coalition cobbled together in 2015 to fight the Houthis, condemned the attack, which he said had targeted a civilian area "in clear violation of worldwide law".

He said it deliberately targeted civilian and populated areas.

There was no immediate confirmation of the report from Saudi authorities.

The Houthis said earlier on Tuesday that the missile was sacked at the King Faisal military base in Jizan.

Yemeni Prime Minister Ahmed Obeid bin Daghr said on Monday the dispute with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) over Socotra island has been resolved.

The Saudi air defenses intercepted the rocket and its shrapnel landed in residential areas without leading to any injuries.

The kingdom suffered its first casualty from a missile attack in March when an Egyptian resident of Riyadh was hit by debris from three missiles targeting the capital as part of a wider attack also aimed at Najran, Jizan and Khamis Mushait.

The United Arab Emirates is a key pillar of the Saudi-led coalition battling Huthi rebels in support of the Yemeni government, but has recently distanced itself from President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi.

He said that the coalition forces had begun the reconstruction of areas liberated from the Houthi militias.

Saudi Arabia has accused the Houthis of using the port to smuggle arms.
