Robinson Cano's Yankees friends react to 'shocking' suspension

Cano tested positive for Furosemide, a diuretic. He said he would accept the suspension, which begins immediately.

Cano has already come out with the cookie cutter denial we always see, with the word "never" attached to cheating the game or taking PEDs, while suggesting Furosemide is not actually a performance-enhancing substance and something he got for medical need. "For more than 15 years, playing professional baseball has been the greatest honor and privilege of my life".

A source familiar with the case told ESPN's T.J. Quinn that Cano tested positive before the season and appealed. Cano reportedly dropped that appeal after Major League Baseball was able to determine his intent. He was placed on the disabled list Monday and, according to multiple reports, had surgery on Tuesday.

Cano released a statement through the MLBPA following the announcement of his suspension, which is effective immediately, accepting that he had taken the substance but that he had not done so to gain an unfair advantage. Cano is an eight-time All-Star -he was the MVP of the game a year ago - but now must deal with the stigma of a suspension.

The Mariners issued a statement saying they were disappointed.

In addition to Cano's statement above, his team also put out a statement of their own, in which they said: "Robinson made a mistake. We will support Robinson as he works through this challenge".

So Cano will now most likely sit with his old Yankees teammate and mentor, Alex Rodriguez, on the Hall of Fame sidelines someday, barring a shift in attitude of voters, who have so far denied entry to Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and others tied to performance-enhancing drugs.

"It's surprising, because I know Robby".
