Second Democratic Senator Backs CIA Nominee Haspel

Second Democratic Senator Backs CIA Nominee Haspel

Even if he stands firm, two more Republicans would need to flip for Haspel to hit the rocks, an unlikely prospect.

Both are still undecided on the nomination, in which the votes likely will end up falling mostly along partisan lines. John McCain remained at home in Arizona battling brain cancer as the debate Wednesday quickly turned to the past use of enhanced interrogation techniques, now banned, that President Donald Trump has suggested perhaps should return. McCain was captured in the fall of 1967 and held as a prisoner of war spanning more than five devastating years. "I like people that weren't captured". McCain served as a Navy Lieutenant in the Vietnam War which took place from November 1, 1955, until April 30, 1975, in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.

McCain knows better than most what torture is and what it isn't, which is why he has come out strongly against what the Central Intelligence Agency and many of his fellow hawks in the Senate euphemistically call "enhanced interrogation techniques".

Graham, who missed much of the Senate action this week to spend time with his friend at the McCain family home, said in an interview that it's thanks to the Arizona senator's work that Haspel will be required to follow the law, as she said she would do. "I appreciate their dilemma and the strain of their duty". Instead, she defended the torture of terrorism suspects during a fraught time after the September 11 attacks when the agency was focused on preventing more attacks.

"For those reasons, and after careful consideration, I will support Ms. Haspel's nomination to lead the agency to which she has dedicated her career", he added. Some were executed, while others served long prison sentences. "As CIA director, Gina Haspel would help defend the homeland from terrorists and help secure America's position on the world stage".

Feinstein said Thursday that she will oppose the nominee, calling the interrogation program part of "one of the darkest chapters in our nation's history and it must not be repeated". But more than 90 former USA ambassadors and diplomats and more than 100 retired generals and admirals have signed letters, raising concerns about her nomination and the extent of her role in "enhanced" interrogation techniques, including waterboarding, as well as destroying evidence of the activities many call torture.

Dick Cheney, vice-president to George W Bush, told Fox News on Friday he thought "the techniques we used were not torture".

"If it were my call, I would not discontinue those programs. McCain, obviously, his life and his experiences, but I think all of us have to make our own independent judgment", said Sen.

"I'm not going to sit here with the benefit of hindsight and judge the very good people who made hard decisions who were running the agency in very extraordinary circumstances at the time", Haspel said.

Across the country, Republican Sen.

Republicans on the committee, led by Chairman Richard Burr of North Carolina, said repeatedly that they had no interest in discussing the issue. He is the second Democrat to announce his support for the President's pick to replace Mike Pompeo, who was confirmed as secretary of state last month.

The U.S. can not be the "shining city on a hill" that President Ronald Reagan loved to speak of if it doesn't soundly reject war crime, including torture by any name.

In the video he also criticized a situation where Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, one of the people behind the organization of the 9/11 attacks, was requested to give a testimony that could affect Haspel appointment.
