SpaceX launches newly updated Falcon 9 rocket

May 12, 2018, 07:44

This satellite will go into Geostationary Transfer Orbit, and should provide broadcast and communications services to folks in Bangladesh. The much-awaited launch had to be pushed back nearly 24 hours, until the next launching opportunity became available.

The Block-5 is the first rocket from Musk's California-based company to satisfy Nasa's standards for its Commercial Crew Program to carry agency astronauts to the International Space Station.

Musk said he thinks customers eventually "will actually prefer to fly on a flight-proven rocket than one that has never flown".

After launch, the mission achieved a quick succession of feats: a first stage engine cutoff followed by a stage separation, and then a second stage burn and fairing release. The booster will be taken apart for analysis before flying again in a few months.

The Falcon 9 Block-5 comes equipped with about 100 upgrades for greater power, safety and reusability than its Block-4 predecessor.

The Falcon 9 Block 5 launched the Bangladesh Communications Satellite Co.'s first orbital satellite, dubbed Bangabandhu-1, into orbit.

The Block 5 is also more powerful than its predecessors, Musk said.

Until now, SpaceX has only ever used any of its boosters twice.

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission chairman made the comment amid intense discussions in the country over the issue after SpaceX aborted the launch less than a minute before blastoff early on Friday.

The Block 5 has new, black landing legs that are retractable. Moments later, the second stage cut its burn.

"We expect it to be a mainstay of SpaceX's business", Musk said, "and to complete something of the order of 300 flights before retirement". The question is what "mass penalty" will have to be paid, primarily in terms of the fuel needed to slow the second stage down so that it can make a controlled descent back through Earth's atmosphere.

The whole point of reusability - multiple flights with swift turnarounds, airplane-style - is to shave launch costs.
