Chinese Broadcasting Company Dumped by Eurovision After Censoring Ireland's Gay Entry

This is not in line with the EBU's values of universality and inclusivity and our proud tradition of celebrating diversity through music.

According to The Irish Times, China have strict rules, citing that 'China prohibit the broadcast of "abnormal sexual relationships and behaviours, such as incest, same-sex relationships, sexual perversion, sexual assault, sexual abuse, sexual violence, and so on"'.

With diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom and Russian Federation at their coolest for decades, this weekend's Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon could offer a chance for both countries to forgive, or punish, each other in front of millions of TV viewers.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced today on its official website that it will terminate its deal with China's Mango TV to broadcast the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest.

The EBU, in return, barred Mango TV from broadcasting Thursday's second semifinal and the final, which involves acts from 26 countries. Having qualified from the second semi-final, he will open the Saturday show.

China's Global instances, a state-owned Ireland, stated on Friday the two behaves - eire and Albania - dropped foul of Chinese censors because they featured an LGBT motif and tattoos. MangoTV could not be reached for comment. But the severity of the ban is surprising given the perceived value of expanding the Eurovision brand into Asia broadly and into China specifically.

Why are Australia in the Eurovision Song Contest?

Ireland's Eurovision entrant Ryan O'Shaughnessy said the decision to ban the Chinese broadcaster was a positive one. "From the very start we have just said love is love", he told BBC Four.

Tonight's final is the climax of the week-long Eurovision contest, which has already seen its share of controversy and surprises.
