India 'cautious' as Donald Trump pulls out of Iran nuclear deal

Trump's announcement that he will reimpose USA economic sanctions on Iran to undermine the nuclear deal is now expected to shift the balance of power against Rouhani.

British officials say their fear is if the U.S. insists on sanctioning European and Asian firms doing business with Iran, as U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton said Wednesday that Washington will do, then Tehran will have even less of an incentive to stick with the accord - and any resumption of a nuclear program by the Iranians would no doubt invite either Israeli or American military reaction.

The pact was signed to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, and in effect made it impossible for the country to produce a bomb.

The lawmakers' anger is reflective of the feelings of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.

The Marker, an economic supplement in Haaretz, said that the new United States sanctions on Iran may cost tens of billions of dollars in worldwide deals. Noting that the International Atomic Energy Agency in February 2015 had stated that Iran is compliant with the terms of the agreement, the Left party said the European allies of the USA, who have disapproved of Trump's action, should work with Russian Federation and China to maintain the pact. As we saw Wednesday with the release of three American prisoners by North Korea, Trump's high-risk and high-reward plays, and his brash style, can lead to wins.

In particular, the banking and private sector of those countries that continue to cooperate with Iran, may face United States sanctions.

When French President Emmanuel Macron was visiting Australia just last week he conceded the Iran agreement was far from flawless and needed changes, especially the issue of missiles and what happens after it expires in 2025. He said, "India has always been maintaining that the Iranian nuclear issue should be resolved peacefully through dialogue and diplomacy". The president much prefers to handle these issues diplomatically.

Long Island Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi, who had campaigned in 2016 against the deal, said it was a mistake to withdraw.

"If a company is active on the large American market and small Iranian market, then it does not benefit much from the fact that its European and Iranian business is protected but not its activities in the U.S.", the source said.

The EU says it will stick to the deal as long as Iran keeps to its commitments, and the coming days and weeks will be crucial in persuading Tehran to stay on board.

India had earlier chose to increase oil imports from Iran in the current fiscal year.

Some prominent reformist politicians and rights activists have accused Rouhani of rolling over to hardliners since being re-elected and there have been calls for him to quit.

Mnuchin told reporters that the Trump administration has talked to "various parties" who would be willing to provide enough oil to offset Iran.

"He is a regime insider. We are isolating ourselves from our own allies".

In February last, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani visited India during which both sides agreed to further expand their cooperation in number of key sectors.

Rouhani, who has a PhD in law from Glasgow Caledonian University, gained prominence overseas when he presided over nuclear talks with Britain, France and Germany.

He predicted Iran would choose to negotiate eventually, or face consequences. However, he might not find allies that are willing to help.

"Rouhani was the best candidate for the regime".

Johnson and the others came to Washington armed with clever solutions to the remaining hang-up over extending restrictions on Iran permanently.

The move was criticized by key allies, including France, Germany and the United Kingdom, who are signatories to the accord and lobbied Trump in recent weeks to remain in it.
