AT&T says it paid to grasp Trump take on policy

"They fail to address, let alone contradict, 99 percent of the statements in what we released", Avenatti said. "Amongst different issues, they successfully concede the receipt of the $500,000 from these with Russian ties".

The payments Avenatti alleges Cohen received from corporate entities amounted to hundreds of thousands of dollars from each company. Boston-based Stat News also reported that then Novartis Chief Executive Officer Joe Jimenez instructed his team to strike a deal with Cohen. After a single meeting they decided "not to engage further". In a section of Avenatti's own report, he describes what he says are possible fraudulent and illegal financial transactions Cohen was engaged in. But the judge on the case blocked discovery on communications between the White House and the Justice Department and AT&T dropped that defense.

In his 7-page report, Avenatti accused Cohen of "likely" committing bank fraud, and detailed $4.4 million in "suspicious" transactions.

But Novartis stopped using Cohen and Essential after one meeting a month into the contract, because they were "unable to provide the services that Novartis had anticipated related to USA healthcare policy matters". But hiring Trump's personal attorney for advice on how to understand the president would be highly unusual. "How Cohen paid, Michael has to explain", he said.

"It stretches the imagination that the work was just for advice".

In a statement Wednesday, the company says it was contacted by the office investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Some of the payments to Trump attorney Michael Cohen were made by global pharmaceutical company Novartis, the company confirmed in a statement to BuzzFeed on Wednesday. "Novartis cooperated fully with the Special Counsel's office and provided all the information requested", the company's statement read.

AT&T said it was approached by investigators for Mueller late a year ago, shortly before its contract with Cohen expired.

The deposits - made to Cohen's shell company, Essential Consultants - first came to light in a report released earlier in the day by Michael Avenatti, the lawyer for porn star Stormy Daniels.

"Mueller made the referral to the Southern District of NY". According to an email shared with the court, the aid worker Michael Cohen "expressed grave concerns about the breach of his privacy by Mr. Avenatti's apparently improper possession and publication of his personal bank records", according to Ryan.

Two other companies that paid Cohen have in recent years decided against paying registered lobbyists to advocate for them in Washington.

Some who used to work for Trump defended Cohen's actions, assuming he did not break any regulations about lobbying. The White House says Trump denies the affair. "Michael offered that. He didn't do anything wrong, he did what lots of people have done over the years".

Michael Cohen, the personal lawyer of Donald Trump now under criminal investigation for his business dealings, aggressively pitched himself to potential clients for his connection with the president, efforts that landed him lucrative consulting deals, The Washington Post reports.

The U.S. Treasury Department's inspector general's office said on Wednesday it opened an investigation into whether confidential banking records involving Cohen may have been leaked.

Columbus Nova is the USA affiliate of a corporate empire belonging to Viktor Vekselberg, a Russian oligarch closely linked to Vladimir Putin. Their contract ended this past December, the company said.

Columbus Nova's lawyer, Richard Owens, said the company hired Cohen after Trump's inauguration in January 2017 as a business consultant "regarding potential sources of capital and potential investments in real estate and other ventures", but that it had nothing to do with Vekselberg.

Novartis not only confirmed it had set up a one-year agreement with Cohen that was "focused on U.S. healthcare policy matters", but that it was approached by the special counsel's office in November 2017 and asked about the payments.
