Taxpayers Are Subsidizing the Lavish Met Gala

Rihanna is co-chairing this year's star-studded soirée for the first time, alongside Amal Clooney, Donatella Versace and Anna Wintour.

The Met Gala - technically a fundraiser for the eponymous museum's Costume Institute - is the supreme see-and-be-seen fashion event in which celebrities typically ignore the annual theme in lieu of looking super hot. Hollywood celebrities will walk the red carpet and attend a special dinner where the funds are raised for the Costume Institute.

Katy Perry is still the reigning queen of the most shocking Met Gala outfits.

"Among the world's most preeminent fashion events, The Met Gala brings together the very best of art and fashion", said Getty Images Global Vice President of Entertainment, Kirstin Benson.

Red carpet arrivals are expected to start around 5:45 p.m. ET.

He says it only took him "like 15 minutes" to prepare for the gala. The fashion magazine will host a live stream on their Instagram handle as well as their Snapchat My Stories. Live From the Red Carpet at the Met Gala will air live, with Giuliana Rancic, Brad Goreski, former Teen Vogue editor-in-chief Elaine Welteroth and Zanna Roberts Rassi covering the event. The 2018 Met Gala will reportedly occur on May 7. According to Fortune, the exhibits are held this year in the Anna Wintour Costume Center, as well as the medieval rooms in the Met on Fifth Avenue, and the Cloisters in northern Manhattan.

The charity ball gets more attention than any other in the country and is attended by the likes of Beyoncé, George Clooney, Nicole Kidman, Derek Jeter and Bradley Cooper. Selena Gomez and The Weeknd famously made their red carpet debut as a couple at the 2017 Gala while the typically low-key Zayn and Gigi also made their own public appearance at the Gala the year prior. Even those who have been common fixtures on the red carpet for the gala for years can be excluded from the current year's event.
