Diseases from bugs on the rise

And that's why the CDC has released its report now, said Folk: to educate the public during the the prime season.

CDC scientists analyzed data reported to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System for 16 notifiable vector-borne diseases from 2004 through 2016 to identify trends. The illnesses include cases of West Nile virus, Lyme disease and Zika virus.

The CDC claimed that the United States is not fully prepared for the increasing health threat brought about by bug bites.

Lyle Petersen, the CDC's director of the division of vector-borne diseases, said the centers estimate there are 300,000 Lyme disease infections in the United States each year - eight to 10 times what's reported.

"We aren't seeing an increase in vector-borne diseases locally", Megan Tinkel, a spokeswoman for the local health department, said in an email.

According to a report issued in 2016 by the federal Environmental Protection Agency, climate change is a leading driver of the increase of vector-borne diseases. It's caused by a tick, called the deer tick. State experts say this type of tick presents "little direct threat" to people in CT. Many other factors are at work, he added, including increased jet travel and a lack of vaccines. "Better control of mosquitoes and ticks is needed to protect people from these costly and deadly diseases". In 2016, the most common tickborne diseases in the USA were Lyme disease and ehrlichiosis/anaplasmosis. But only about 35,000 diagnoses are reported.

According to the CDC 80 percent of vector borne illnesses are caused by non-preventative measures. Petersen said, however, that federal programs are increasing funding to those organizations.

Wade-Taxter said the state is working to expand tick surveillance "to get a better picture of the distribution of various tick species in IN and what diseases they may carry".

Train vector control staff on five core competencies for conducting prevention and control activities.

If you're going into a brushy area or the woods, wear repellent that contains 20 percent or more DEET, picaridin, or IR3535 on exposed skin, the CDC says. As such, the CDC has launched a public health campaign to protect against risky illnesses from insect bites. And speaking of clothing, make sure to wear longer trousers when you're outside, and tuck your trousers into your socks to minimize skin exposure. Treat clothing and gear such as trousers, boots, socks and tents with a product containing permethrin, or buy permethrin-treated clothing and gear.

The Indiana Department of Health is encouraging Indiana residents to take precautions against tick bites.

Find and remove ticks daily from family members and pets. So, try to do your best (especially if you're going into areas where you know you're likely to encounter ticks or mosquitoes).
