Iowa governor signs most restrictive abortion bill into law

On Friday, May 4, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signed the controversial "Fetal Heartbeat" abortion bill into law, effectively making the state the most hard in the union in which to terminate a pregnancy.

"We stand with Iowa lawmakers and Governor Kim Reynolds for advancing legislation that recognizes the humanity of the unborn child by acknowledging and protecting her or him at the first detectable heartbeat".

She added: "This law is not just about the women and families of Iowa, it's about all Americans having the right to decide if, when, and how to have a family". This is about life. I am not going to back down from who I am or what I believe in.

Reynolds said at the bill signing that stopping a beating heart is immoral and to sell fetal body parts, which also is outlawed in the legislation, is "sickening".

Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, said the heartbeat bill will "undoubtedly be challenged by the courts like other unconstitutional abortion bans before it".

Abortion opponents hoping to land the issue back in front of the nation's top court believe the 5-4 conservative majority could sharply curtail abortion access or ban it outright. That can happen as early as six weeks' gestation, before many women even know they are pregnant.

In recent years, states like Arkansas and North Dakota have passed fetal heartbeat bans similar to the one Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) just signed, though both have been blocked in court.

Planned Parenthood and the ACLU promised a lawsuit against Reynolds before she signed the bill, criticizing the governor for signing a bill they say is "so clearly unconstitutional".

There had been little doubt that Reynolds, who describes herself as "100 percent pro-life", would sign the bill.

However, supporters of the bill such as GOP state Sen. Gov. Reynolds, we'll see you in court.

Dawn Laguens, the executive vice president of Planned Parenthood, told Fox News that the legislation is "an extreme and draconian policy that takes aim at a woman's right to control her own body, life, and future".

"We couldn't be more pleased", DeWitte said in a statement. It additionally stated passage and enactment of the measure has set the state up for a protracted authorized struggle.

However, the measure would not ban abortion after six weeks in all cases - some exemptions include instances of rape, incest, fetal abnormalities or to save the mother's life.
