Wells Fargo Championship, second round

In his last start before the Wells Fargo, McIlroy shot 74 in the final round of the Masters and finished six behind victor Patrick Reed.

Billy Horschel and Scott Piercy rallied from three shots behind the leaders at the beginning of Sunday's final round of the Zurich Classic by shooting a five-under par 67 in foursomes (alternate shot) to top Jason Dufner and Pat Perez by a shot.

However, he shot a 2-over-par 74 on Sunday and finished tied for fifth, six shots behind first-time victor Reed.

Charlotte resident Johnson Wagner rocketed out of the gate with a 4-under-par 34-33=67 during round one of the Wells Fargo Championship, good for a piece of the clubhouse lead alongside Tyrrell Hatton, Keith Mitchell, and Peter Malnati. And he knocked back a few bottles of wine - "that sounds really bad; it wasn't that bad", McIlroy said with a sheepish grin - before his wife Erica finally had enough and dragged him out of the house.

"I didn't mean it like that at all". It wasn't that bad. "Now I think after everything that's happened over the past 50 years and the improvements that Augusta makes year on year, I feel like the amount of time between the last major of the season, the first major of the season, the hype, the eyeballs, the everything - it's just a notch above the other ones".

"Once I got back in my sort of routine, I was fine".

"I was disappointed because I didn't give a good account of myself that last day". "I felt that I got lucky on Saturday". I'm sure the Ryder Cup captains were paying attention to how certain pairings played in the two very different formats, possibly getting a read on where to place their eventual qualifiers in the hard and stressful rotation later this year. There were a couple of balls that hit trees and came back into the fairway.

"I was sort of holding my game together and on Sunday - under the pressure of chasing Patrick down - it just never clicked for me". "It was disappointing that's the way the week finished".

McIlroy shot a final-round 62 to win his first Wells Fargo Championship in 2010.

"I'm a proud victor of (the U.S. Open and British Open)", he said Thursday.
