UK: New Home Secretary Javid pledges Windrush help

The Prime Minister confirmed the practice was in place when she was home secretary, but Downing Street said Mrs May had no information on targets for immigration removals when Ms Rudd wrongly told MPs last Wednesday that they didn't exist.

"Another leak Sunday showed Rudd wrote a letter to Prime Minister Theresa May outlining an "ambitious but deliverable" plan to increase deportations by 10 percent".

The government has been struggling to explain why some descendants of the "Windrush generation", invited to Britain to plug labour shortfalls between 1948 and 1971, have been denied basic rights and have been incorrectly labelled as illegal immigrants.

Amber Rudd has resigned over her role in the Windrush scandal.

The son of immigrants from Pakistan, Javid at the weekend tried to defuse anger among ethnic minorities over immigration targets by saying his own family could have been caught up in it and that the government was working hard to "put things right".

On learning about the treatment of the post-war migrants, he said: "I thought that could be my mum.my dad.my uncle.it could be me".

He was instructing the press office to brief people like me that "there are no removal targets for immigration enforcement officers, regional or national".

The most urgent task I have is to help those British citizens who came from the Caribbean, the so-called Windrush generation, and make sure they are all treated with the decency and the fairness they deserve.

Many in May's Conservative Party, welcomed the appointment, with Liz Truss, a treasury minister, writing on Twitter that Javid "is effective, no-nonsense and fearless". But at the same time, ultimately believed "that Britain is better off in (the EU)". He was Business Secretary in the previous government of David Cameron.

Campaigning ahead of crucial local elections Thursday, May faced questions about the Windrush scandal.

"People who have entered the United Kingdom illegally or overstayed here should expect to face the full force of the law and know that they will be removed if they will not leave this country voluntarily".

In an interview with Sky News he said: "My first priority is to make sure the Home Office does all it can to keep British people safe".

Sajid Javid is vowing to "do right" by the people affected by the Windrush scandal as he starts his new job as home secretary.

Asked that question at today's lobby briefing, the prime minister's official spokesman did not dispute the premise of it, but stressed Javid's recent track record as the reason for why he got the nod for home secretary.

Theresa May came out fighting over immigration yesterday following the resignation of Amber Rudd.

Ms Rudd, one of the few pro-Remain ministers in Mrs May's cabinet, is the fourth person to resign from the British government in the past six months.

"I think there are many political fingerprints over the mishandling of Windrush cases, including going back to the Tony Blair years", he said.
