Tiger Woods makes big revelation ahead of the Wells Fargo Championship

Instead of holes that presented nine legitimate birdie opportunities in each round, it is now more like five.

Tiger Woods has a new set of irons...

"No, they're still friends of mine and we still text each other but I am now working on my game and there is less time for them to either come out to dinner or ask me questions of hop on the phone", said Woods.

"They are on the slower side". "They feel springy and they feel fast, especially when I'm walking on them, but they're not putting that way". "I think he just did wonderfully". "If I make a couple putts, I'd be 2 or 3 under par, which is fine". Then I started to lift a little bit, to get my muscle strength back and eventually my speed. "Just a unusual combo to have firm but a little bit on the slower side". But he hit a poor wedge that led to bogey on the par-5 10th, atoned for that with a birdie on the par-5 15th, only to give back that shot with a three-putt bogey from 15 feet on No. 16. He missed four putts inside 8 feet, including 4-footers on Nos.

At the 18th, after an excellent approach from 185 yards out of a fairway bunker to 10 feet, he missed that for birdie.

"This is not an easy golf course", Woods said.

Another three-putt fell Woods at the start of the Green Mile, Quail Hollow's long and hard three-hole finish. "Some of these holes have become a lot more stout".

Peterson carded a six-under 65 at Quail Hollow, thanks largely to back-to-back eagles at the seventh and eighth holes Thursday.

Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler all are playing for the first time since the Masters.

Tiger Woods' tee time today: Woods will tee off at 12:50 p.m. "I've always been a pretty good putter all of my career, so that's something I've never really anxious too much about".

All told, Woods put together a mostly unspectacular round.

Fans from all across the country are traveling to Charlotte this weekend for the Wells Fargo Championship and to witness the return of Tiger Woods.

Dogged by injury and scandal, it has been 13 years since Woods last triumphed at Augusta and it appeared as if many of those teeing it up at the year's first major had forgotten what a ruthless competitor he was back then.

Woods is here this week for the Wells Fargo Championship, a tournament he won 11 years ago, back before all the bad stuff started happening, back before all the young guys came and filled the void left in his absence, back before all the courses were Tiger-proofed and redesigned to contain him and his game.

For a number of years, we endured one comeback attempt after another, a series of missed cuts, withdrawals and uncomfortable descriptions of body parts, from misfiring glutes to spasms caused by release trajectories.
