Cambridge Analytica Not Dissolved But Merged

Attorney General Josh Shapiro announced Thursday an investigation determined almost 3 million Pennsylvanians' Facebook data was shared with Cambridge Analytica and additional third parties.

SCL Elections, its parent, as well as Cambridge Analytica began insolvency proceedings in the UK, and said they would soon start bankruptcy proceedings in the United States.

In 2016, Prince was also the second-largest donor to Make America Number 1 - a super PAC founded by the Mercer family (of the Donald Trump-supporting billionaire Robert Mercer, who funneled $10 million to Cambridge Analytica), ran by the former Trump campaign CEO and White House chief strategist Steve Bannon along with Kellyanne Conway.

While Cambridge Analytica itself continues to deny any illegal action and blaming media bias, the company has claimed that its work consisted of activities accepted as a "standard component of online advertising". Last week it said it was "no Bond villain" and had been vilified by inaccurate reporting, including footage of Nix boasting of the company's dirty tricks - including honey traps and fake news - to win elections. Additionally, parallel bankruptcy proceedings will soon be commenced on behalf of Cambridge Analytica and certain of the Company's U.S. affiliates in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of NY.

Critics of Cambridge Analytica and the largely unregulated use of personal data for political campaigns said the closing of the company will have little effect on the kinds of abuses that the company is alleged to have committed.

Asked by Canadian lawmakers about how the closure of the businesses would affect the investigation and any possible sanctions, Damian Collins, the chairman of the digital, culture, media and sport committee, said: "It doesn't change our inquiry at all".

Meanwhile, British authorities today said that their investigation into the data breach scandal involving Cambridge Analytica will not be impacted with the shutdown of the political consulting firm.

Facebook provided this estimate in response to a bipartisan letter sent to the social network, an effort led by Shapiro that includes a total of 41 state Attorneys General.

"The ICO will continue its civil and criminal investigations and will seek to pursue individuals and directors as appropriate and necessary even where companies may no longer be operating", she said.

The U.K. and European Union parliaments also want Zuckerberg to answer their questions publicly, though he has so far declined.

Over the past months, CA and its associated organisations have been embroiled in allegations that the Facebook profiles of millions of Americans had been wrongly harvested and used by the company, while a separate undercover investigation by Britain's Channel 4 News pointed to some of the unsavoury tactics that the company touted as some of the means that it used to help political campaigns achieve their goals.

It collected information on tens of millions of people and their Facebook friends, even those who did not download the app themselves.
