Window crack on Southwest Airlines flight prompts unplanned landing
May 03, 2018, 09:33
There were no injuries reported on Wednesday after Flight 957, a Boeing 737, landed safely. Debris from an exploded engine had broken the window, and she was partially pulled form the plane, dying of blunt force trauma to her head, neck and torso. The interior window was still intact.
The flight departed Midway at 8:36 a.m. and landed in Cleveland at 9:53 a.m., Southwest said.
There was no depressurization in the cabin, and therefore the oxygen masks were not deployed, FAA spokesman Greg Martin said.
Cal DeNyse, who was on the Southwest flight that was diverted Wednesday, said that although he heard other passengers talking about last month's episode, most were fairly calm.
The incident two weeks ago was caused by a faulty fan blade that caused one of the engines to explore - throwing shrapnel and shattering one of the windows.
According to Fox News, not all the layers of window panes in the window shattered during the incident today, so it did not actually leave an opening [VIDEO]to the outside world.
Social media images show cracks streaking across what's apparently the same window. The pilots did not make an emergency landing, but they did, however, divert the plane to the nearest airport once that window broke.
Some of the plane's 76 passengers told The Associated Press that the crew quickly checked the window near an emergency exit and handled the situation smoothly.
The engine failure also prompted regulatory authorities to order inspections of certain CFM56-7B engines used on Boeing 737s.
A Southwest Airlines spokesperson said the crew made the "unscheduled stop" for a maintenance review of the potential crack. He said he couldn't recall a similar incident caused by crazing and that the pilots were right to make a quick landing.
