Trump reimbursed lawyer for porn star payment: Giuliani

May 03, 2018, 09:35

Fox News host Laura Ingraham weighed in on Rudy Giuliani's unexpected admission Wednesday night that President Donald Trump reimbursed his longtime personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, for a $130,000 payment to the porn star, Stormy Daniels.

Asked by reporters on Air Force One earlier this month about the deal, Trump said: "You'll have to ask Michael Cohen".

But tonight, Giuliani contradicted that story.

He added that the payment did not represent a campaign financing violation because it was "not campaign money".

Andrew Herman, an attorney specializing in campaign finance law at Miller & Chevalier, said Giuliani's argument that this was a private payment unrelated to the campaign appears to be "pretty far-fetched" given the timing - weeks before the election while Trump was under fire for his behaviour with women and for an "Access Hollywood" tape in which he spoke of groping women without their consent.

"No", Trump said. "I don't know". "Michael would take care of things like this, like I take care of things like this for my clients".

"According to Mr Giuliani, Mr Trump and Mr Cohen were co-conspirators in a felony", he said. "Oh, I didn't know that he did".

Trump, in turn, has also repeatedly sounded off on Comey via social media.

Cohen and White House aides have denied that Trump had an affair with Daniels.

"That was money that was paid by his lawyer, the way I would do, out of his law firm funds or whatever funds, it doesn't matter". I don't burden them with every single thing that comes along. "The president reimbursed it over several months".

In court documents filed in Los Angeles, Ms Daniels" attorney said: "Cohen meant to convey that Ms Clifford is a liar, someone who should not be trusted, and that her claims about her relationship with Mr Trump is "something (that) isn't true'". "These are busy people".

Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, claims she had an affair with Trump in 2006 and was paid the sum as part of a "hush agreement".

Michael Avenatti, Daniels' lawyer in two pending lawsuits against Trump, responded on Twitter, saying, "Mr. Trump stood on AF1 and blatantly lied.

When I heard Cohen's retainer of $35,000, when he was doing no work for the president, I said, 'That's how he's repaying, that's how he's repaying it, with a little profit and a little more for paying taxes, for Michael'".

Giuliani joined Trump's legal team, which has been remade in recent weeks, with the goal of negotiating a possible interview of Trump by Robert Mueller and to help bring the special counsel's investigation into Russian election interference to an end. The president feels even worse.
