Japanese embassy will not be relocated to Quds: Shinzo Abe

During their meeting in Jerusalem, Abe was set to talk about Middle East peace and relay Japan's commitment to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Japanese officials said before their talks.

Concluding a two-day visit to Jordan on Tuesday, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe tweeted yesterday that "Jordan has played a core role in the stability of the region for many years, including the acceptance of Syria refugees".

He reiterated his call on the UN Security Council to hold "an worldwide peace conference this year that would establish an global multilateral mechanism to oversee the political process" while noting that the US has abandoned its role as "an honest peace broker" by recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and deciding to move its embassy there.

"Washington has become part of the problem and not the solution", he said in response to the US' decision to move the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, adding that President Donald Trump had isolated himself by choosing to do so.

Jerusalem remains at the heart of the Palestine-Israel conflict, with Palestinians hoping that East Jerusalem - occupied by Israel since 1967 - might eventually serve as the capital of an independent Palestinian state.

"We seek a solution that guarantees resolving all of the final status issues, foremost the issue of refugees and prisoners, in accordance with relevant global resolutions", he added.

Abbas threw his weight behind Tokyo's policy toward North Korea, according to the officials.

Visiting Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday discussed Iran's nuclear program and developing trade ties.
