Former LSU safety Eric Reid is suing NFL

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch said Monday the team remains in contact with safety Eric Reid and his agent and has not closed the door on re-signing him.

In March, Reid pushed back the idea he could be signed at a discount because there are concerns over his protesting.

Reid played in 70 games over his first five seasons with the 49ers primarily as a safety.

The Cowboys still need help at safety and there is one starting caliber player still on the market. Kaepernick, who started the movement in August 2016, has remained a free agent since opting out of his deal with the Niners in March 2017. But owner Mike Brown "almost exclusively" centered the conversation around Reid's protesting, with Brown reportedly saying he would 'prohibit it.' Reid wasn't prepared to commit on the spot. A source told ESPN that Reid has hired attorney Mark Geragos to help resolve the situation. "Our union supports Eric and we are considering other legal options to pursue", the union said in a statement Wednesday.

In April, Reid accompanied Kaepernick when Amnesty International gave the former National Football League quarterback its Ambassador of Conscience Award for his public protest against racial and social injustice. "If you think is, then your mindset is part of the problem too", he tweeted.

The NFL did not immediately respond to Reid's claim.

Both Reid and Kaepernick's grievances have been filed under under the NFL's Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Reid claimed at the beginning of the offseason that he wasn't receiving interest from teams due to his decision to kneel during the national anthem. "People who know me, know my character".

A few weeks ago, though, Reid said he would consider protesting in different ways. Their right to protest shouldn't be seen as a hindrance on the teams they play for - and ultimately, history will note these players, who protested and stood their ground, as noble and justified for doing so.

"I don't think it'll be in the form of protesting during the anthem".
