Sabres win NHL Draft Lottery to secure first overall pick

Those were the numbers that came up first in the NHL Draft Lottery and may have changed the course of Buffalo Sabres' history.

The Canucks have not had a top-three draft pick since former GM Brian Burke finagled Danny and Hank Sedin second and third overall in 1999.

The Carolina Hurricanes made the biggest jump in the draft order by moving from the 11th spot to 2nd. They took Jeff Catrer (11th overall) and Mike Richards (24th) in 2003; Ivan Provorov (seventh) and Travis Konecny (24th) in 2015; and Nolan Patrick (second) and Frost past year.

At the time, few Canucks fans would have traded the way the season ended, with a storybook ending for the Sedins as they retired, for better odds in the draft lottery.

"It's a good pick, we're obviously in better shape than we were this morning". And they also selected Pierre Turgeon with top pick in 1987. Russian forward Andrei Svechnikov is the top-ranked North American prospect based on him playing for Barrie of the Ontario Hockey League.

The addition of a game-changing defenseman in Rasmus Dahlin could alter the trajectory of this franchise, as well as give coach and Hall of Fame defenseman Phil Housley an enormously talented blueliner whom he can groom.

"I don't think it does", Benning said.

Swedish prospect Adam Boqvist, Acadie-Bathurst Titan Noah Dobson, London Knight Evan Bouchard and the University of Michigan's Quinn Hughes are all offensive defencemen rated in the second half of the top 10 by Sportsnet. "The value of trading at 11 is much less than trading the second overall pick at the draft".

The Red Wings had an 8.5 percent chance of winning the lottery and a 26.1 percent chance of finishing in the top three.

Winning the lottery was a long shot.

As part of the trade to acquire center Matt Duchene from the Colorado Avalanche on November 5, the Senators have the option to retain keep this first-round pick and instead send their first-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft to the Avalanche. "But we look at all of our options every year".
