Why Ravens fans should be excited about Lamar Jackson

Baltimore traded back twice in the last night's 1st round of the National Football League draft - first from 16 to 22, then again back to 25 - and still managed to fill its biggest need with pass-catching tight end Hayden Hurst from SC.

The Ravens traded two second-round picks (one in 2019) and swapped fourth-round picks to get the 32nd spot from the Philadelphia Eagles.

He showed poise and patience in the Ravens war room as he negotiated six deals - including three during a frenetic opening night of the draft.

Being that Hurst is 25 years old when the season starts and the fact he does need to work on some of the blocking aspects of his game, Hurst is still a safe and solid first-round selection by the Ravens.

"I can't wait to get to Baltimore".

Heisman Trophy victor Baker Mayfield went to the Cleveland Browns with the first overall pick, while the Eagles' NFC East rivals New York Giants took Penn State star running back Saquon Barkley with the second selection.

Additionally, it is worth noting that Joe Flacco is in the final guaranteed year of his contract, so all the pressure is going to be on him to hang onto his job.

"Joe Flacco is our quarterback".

With the trade and the first round complete, what direction will the Eagles go? "And then when we got to finally pick at 25, I think one player had went off the board at that point, and that's when we made a decision to go with Hayden".

After falling to the bottom of the first round, Jackson was asked whether he had a chip on his shoulder.

Andrews also won OU's first Mackey Award after a redshirt junior season where he averaged 15.5 yards per catch and scored eight touchdowns.

In fact there's an unbelievable story from Bleacher Report's Dan Pompei chronicling how Hurst went from a frustrated flameout in the Pittsburgh Pirates minor league baseball system to the top tight end chosen in this year's draft.

In the weeks leading up to the draft, Newsome focused on improving a passing attack that a year ago ranked 29th in the NFL.

"They said they needed a guy to come and stretch the field vertically", Hurst said.

Newsome is stepping down as general manager after this season.

Newsome, 62, has been in charge of the Ravens since the franchise arrived in Baltimore from Cleveland following the 1995 season.

His goal this year is to snag enough talent in the draft to help the Ravens end a three-year playoff drought.
